The Solar Orbiter spacecraft has recorded a sunspot group of “incredible size.” The active region is gaining energy, but there are no signs of strong eruptions yet.
Scientists are comparing the new structure to Region 3664, observed in May 2024. That series of flares caused the strongest geomagnetic storm in the past 20 years.
The laboratory explained that the power of solar events is directly related to the size of sunspots. Large groups attract attention because of this correlation.
The Sun completes a full rotation relative to Earth in four weeks. In about seven days, the region will become visible at the left edge of the disk. Another week will be needed for it to move into the most dangerous position — directly opposite the planet.
Specialists note that two weeks are enough for a sunspot group to change or disappear. If major eruptions begin on the far side, they will be detected from Earth by plasma clouds erupting from behind the edge of the Sun.
